What the Program is All About
A core tenet of the Safe Routes to School movement is Walk and Bike to School Days. Organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School and funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 40 countries participate in International Walk and Bike to School Days. What began in 1997 as a one-day event evolved into a global celebration with record attendance. Today, thousands of schools across America from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participate the first Wednesday of every October and May.
